Sacred Circle Dance in the Open Directory Project (ODP) aka DMOZ
The ODP (http://www.dmoz.org/) was established many years ago to provide a reliable starting point for searching the internet. It lists over 4 million websites in over 70 languages, and it is maintained by a community of volunteer editors around the world. It provides the information for hundreds of other directories including that of Google. The folk dancing section (Arts/Performing Arts/Dance/Folk/) lists over 1400 sites, some of which are very good resources for video clips, recordings, step sheets, costume and dance information. There is finally an Arts/Performing Arts/Dance/Sacred and Circle Dance category for which some people (hi, Stefan) have been waiting nearly 5 years. This category has ended up as a bit of a catch-all defined more by the idea of a community and what it isn't rather than a specific genre. I confess I am responsible for both the description and organisation of the category. I apologise for any mistakes. At least it exists. The Dance categories have a dearth of editors because most dancers have better things to do than sit at a computer. Since the new category, like many dance categories, does not have an editor, this means it could be quite a while before new suggestions will be added (though I will keep an eye on it , commitments elsewhere allowing, over the next few months). Anyone can contribute to the directory by suggesting new sites, pointing out errors through the update url link or volunteering to be an editor for a category (hint, hint).
An editor processes any suggested sites and searches the internet for new sites. Being an editor requires the ability to be entirely objective and write exact (dull) descriptions, a willingness to learn the ropes and whatever time you feel you can spare. You also have to be incorruptible. The 'about dmoz' link on the site will tell you more. You can contact me through my 'designed to be irritating' ODP profile via the link at the bottom of the Arts page (http://www.dmoz.org/Arts) about anything ODP related (except, of course, about getting your site listed).
PS As of Jan 12th, all the sites listed are now also in the Google Directory. John Douglas |
